SOUNDBITE (English) Jeffrey Winters, political analyst: "So there is a great deal more fragmentation than in the past, which means that no single party, no single vision emerges within the parliament as being the solution to Indonesia's multi-dimensional problems." Jakarta, 12 April 2004 22. Various shots of people looking up vote counting on computers in the National Tally Centre STORYLINE: Vote counting in Indonesia's parliamentary election is still continuing. But with more than two thirds of votes counted, two new parties have already stolen the limelight in these elections. One is the Democratic Party, the other Prosperous Justice Party. The respectable Indonesia's Survey Institute predicted these parties' strong rise on the eve of the April 5 election. Despite having only gained about seven percent of the votes, both parties have successfully tapped into the widespread dissatisfaction with bigger, more established parties and public desire for change. But their appeals couldn't be more different. Former Indonesian security minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono helped found the Democratic Party in 2001 as a small and relatively unknown party. But the party has since become a political machine behind Yudhoyono's presidential ambition, and at the same time it relied heavily on his strong track records. The Prosperous Justice Party has a different story to tell. SOUNDBITE: (Bahasa Indonesia) \"I see that one of the main problems in the PADI party is financial readiness, which is very minimal. The PADI is built in every province by professionals and NGO members. Where members are not already businessmen the PADI is not very good at finding sponsors. So the main barrier for is financial problems.\" SUPER CAPTION: Bambang Sulistomo, Indonesian Democratic Alliance Party Almost half the field is made up of Muslim parties. Some have nationally known leaders such as Amien Rais and Abdurahmin Wahid. Others are based on ideals and don't even campaign, but go door to door like missionaries to sell their party. SOUNDBITE: (Bahasa Indonesia) \"If we rewind the Muslim history where the great leader is Mohammed the prophet, he is a statesman, not only for the Arab countries, but for the whole world. He has taken part in politics and its up to the people who do it to decide whether they want it dirty or clean. Right?\" SUPER CAPTION: Syaiffuddin Syah Nasution, Love and Peace Party Megawati Sukarnoputri's Indonesian Democratic Party (P-D-I) has dominated the streets of the capital, while small parties next door are largely ignored. The Deliberation, Work and Cooperation Party actually hopes to take 10 percent of the vote, due to their past social activism. Party leader Mien Sugandi is aiming her message at a not-so-narrow segment of the electorate. SOUNDBITE: (English) \"The men, society, still recognise that women can do nothing. So far we still need the department of the women's role, so that we can show to the people, we can show to the society, especially the men, that we can do as well as men.\" SUPER CAPTION: Mien Sugandi, Deliberation, Work and Cooperation Party Sugandi also says that her party is the only one to recognise the rights of prostitutes and transsexuals. SOUNDBITE: (English) \"And I take pity on them, so all the people look down to the people, to the transsexual, but not me, not me because we are all coming from God.\ You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/f00f9a1149d5c4f3f02968b48397aa24 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

As Indonesia's economy grows, so is the gap between rich and the poor. With elections due in July, the economy is likely to be a key issue for many voters. The government admits that the growing divide is a problem that needs to be addressed soon. Opposition parties are trying to reach out to poor people, saying they will improve their lives.
